Woody Georges

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

College/School: Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Woody Georges is one of three children raised by a single mother in Miami. As far back as he can remember, his mother tirelessly encouraged, pushed, and empowered Woody to pursue the very best grades and higher education. Herself a Certified Nursing Assistant/Licensed Practical Nurse, Woody’s mom would also be his biggest champion and lifelong mentor to pursue a rewarding career in health care.

His career aspirations were reinforced while serving six years in the U.S. Navy, three of which were as a corpsman for the Marines First Tank Battalion, Delta Company.  In his military service he shared field medical practices and performed military operations with international military personnel from the Middle East and South East Asia.

A new challenge would present itself once Woody arrived at FIU. His first semester in the Veterans Bachelor of Science in Nursing program was plagued with course overload and self-doubt about whether he made the right choice to pursue nursing. With guidance from FIU staff and faculty, his positive experiences with the program began to take shape in his second semester. Group assignments and help and support from his classmates ultimately restored his self-confidence, and he began to thrive, earning a 3.68 GPA.

Woody directly attributes his success to three things: the lifelong encouragement of his mother; the guidance of other military personnel and his unique experience as a military medical corpsman; and the priceless sense of community at FIU that showed him what his identity could be as a nurse.
