Stephin Janis

Degree: Master’s in Accounting

College/School: College of Business

As a child, Stephin Janis survived a tragic fire in his native India, leaving him to cope with anxiety issues at the age of eight. His parents moved to the U.S. in 2003 with Stephin and his sister to give their children a future they never had. To support their dreams, they sacrificed their savings and worked minimum wage jobs at a factory assembly line.

As he approached college, Stephin became determined to overcome his anxiety. At FIU, he dove into co-curricular activities, becoming president of Beta Alpha Psi, the student organization for accounting and finance professionals. During his presidency, the organization was recognized as the most active business organization on campus and won national recognition, with Stephin’s strong leadership skills and outgoing personality inspiring fellow members to succeed.

Stephin also enjoyed a stellar academic career at FIU, earning his bachelor’s degree from FIU’s School of Accounting with a 3.98 GPA. He became the first FIU student to win a $10,000 merit scholarship from the PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board), one of only 102 scholarships awarded nationally. Stephin completed an audit internship with EY (Ernst and Young LLP) and earned a 4.0 GPA in his graduate studies while tutoring undergraduate accounting students.

Stephin credits his mentors, Beta Alpha Psi faculty advisor Jimmy Carmenate and Eduardo Aiello, a previous president of Beta Alpha Psi, with guiding him through his career at FIU. After graduation, he will join the assurance practice of EY’s Miami office.
