Sheila Alemany
Degree: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
College/School: College of Engineering & Computing
Sheila Alemany was selected for the highly competitive National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. As a result, she co-authored three professional peer-reviewed research papers, including one that was selected for publication and presentation at the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications. She was also selected as a Department of Defense (DoD) research apprentice. Sheila continued her research at FIU’s Telecommunications and Information Technology (IT2) Institute and was named a recipient of the national 2018 Computing Research Association Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Finalist award. Through FIU’s Upsilon Pi Epsilon’s SparkDev program, Sheila also researched how to more accurately predict hurricane trajectories using artificial intelligence. She led a team of students, presented her research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center and in a top artificial intelligence conference. Her work inspired the use of artificial intelligence in environmental forecasting techniques across the country. Sheila also interned at MIT’s Lincoln Lab as cybersecurity research intern. She has shared her passion for STEM with younger students through FIU’s Big Sisters Mentorship Program. After graduation, Sheila plans to pursue her doctoral degree in computer science.
