Claudia Ramirez-Mederos and her family moved to the U.S. in 2013 from Spain. Claudia worked hard to learn English and decided to pursue a career in civil engineering. At FIU, Claudia was vice president of Tau Beta Pi, a teaching assistant and a tutor for engineering students. She also interned with Infrastructure Engineers, analyzing infrastructure from around Florida. She evaluated how safe structures were and how much restoration they needed. A McNair scholar, Claudia completed a summer research experience at Duke University where she assisted in developing a three-axis shake table to study the effects of earthquakes on structures. After graduation, Claudia will pursue her doctorate in civil engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
