Stevenson Chery
Degree: Doctor of Medicine
College/School: Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine
Stevenson Chery’s decision to become a doctor was influenced by a family tragedy. His mother lost a baby after being turned away at a hospital in Haiti because she didn’t have money to pay for her care.
In his first year of medical school, Stevenson and two other Haitian-American classmates founded KORE Haiti, a non-profit organization, to reach out to people who in many cases had never seen a doctor. They also wanted, leading by example, to inspire a new generation to believe that there is hope. In the past four years, they have raised funds and recruited volunteers, including other FIU medical students, and have made several medical mission trips to Haiti, impacting thousands of lives.
Stevenson, the first in his family to graduate from college and medical school, excelled at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He is past president of the Student National Medical Association, a medical school ambassador, a college admissions student interviewer, and a Gold Humanism Honor Society inductee.
Stevenson embodies the College of Medicine’s mission of social accountability. His desire to improve the human condition was rewarded with the Alpha Rho Boule Scholarship, which recognizes someone who has overcome educational, social or economic disadvantages and has given back to society.
Stevenson is ready to go to work after graduation—he matched into his first-choice residency program at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he will be specializing in family medicine.
