Alexander Melendez
Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration
College/School: College of Business
Alexander Melendez has long been a believer in owning his own development, including listening to others who give him wise advice.
When his Cuban-born parents stressed the importance of education, Alex studied hard and earned an associate degree in fashion merchandising at Miami International University of Art and Design before coming to FIU for a bachelor’s degree. He loved the idea of connecting consumers to a company but thought earning a marketing degree would take too long, given how few of his credits would transfer for that particular degree. Professor Tim Birrittella convinced Alex to invest the time to get the exact degree he wanted for his future.
Not only did Alex earn his marketing degree, he distinguished himself through the popular on-campus organization called the American Marketing Association, again owning his own development. He became a junior account executive at the organization’s in-house agency called Roaring Concepts and then became a director. Alex then was ready to become chapter president for FIU’s AMA -- one of their best presidents ever, according to Birritella, the chapter advisor. At the 2017 AMA Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, Alex won first place in marketing research and fourth place in the marketing strategy competition.
Last summer Alex landed an internship with Procter & Gamble and he has now joined the company as an account manager for hair care on the Walmart Global Customer Team. He plans to pursue his MBA in a few years.
