On behalf of the faculty and administration of Florida International University, I extend congratulations on your graduation. We salute and commend you for all that you have achieved as students of FIU, and are proud of the role you have played in our continuing success as a major urban public research university.
Commencement will mark the end of your time as FIU students and the first day of your lives as FIU alumni. I welcome you to FIU’s alumni family and to the next stage in your lifelong relationship with our university.
You will be joining a truly distinguished network. FIU alumni – a group that numbers over 200,000 – live in every state of the union and in 180 countries around the world, with over to 145,000 here in South Florida. In virtually every field of study, our graduates are making significant contributions locally, nationally, and globally.
I invite each of you to remain actively engaged with the university and the alumni association, which offers graduates benefits such as career development, professional networking and nationwide Panther Perks. I encourage you to support your alma mater by joining a volunteer group, mentoring a student or making an annual gift to support student scholarships.
The future of FIU is in the hands of its alumni. You – our soon-to-be-graduates – are our “lifeline for a lifetime,” and have a continuing role in helping us to build and support this great university in the months and years ahead.
I challenge you to work with me to keep FIU accessible to the best and brightest students, to expand our private financial support, and to embrace high tech while not forgetting high touch. These are the urgent challenges we face as this new era unfolds.
As you enter the next phase of your lives and careers, please remember that the Class of 2016 will forever be an integral part of FIU.
