Scott A. Phillips

Degree: Juris Master

College/School: College of Law

A lifelong learner and New Orleans native, Scott A. Phillips began his collegiate journey as a track and field student athlete at the University of South Alabama, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2001.

After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Scott was inspired to join the United States Navy Hospital Corps. He served for nine years, but his military service was restricted in 2014 when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes — a disqualifying chronic illness.

While serving, Scott had continued his passion for learning by earning numerous certifications and his master’s in executive health care management from the University of New Orleans. In 2015, Scott was selected by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for the Graduate Healthcare Administrative Training Program Fellowship. He later worked as a human resource management specialist for the Miami VA Healthcare System’s Workers’ Compensation Program (WCP).  Scott gained insight to lack of congressional progress in healthcare reform, while noticing financial sector regulation and policy reform. As a result, he decided to pursue a Juris Master with a concentration in banking compliance at FIU Law.

While studying at FIU Law in 2018, Scott went through the military medical board adjudication process and was officially disqualified from service. Despite these challenges, he persevered, and graduates with a 3.95 GPA.

After graduation, Scott will enroll in FIU’s inaugural Doctor of Business Administration program.
