Luiz Pereira

Degree: Bachelor of Business Administration

College/School: College of Business

Luiz Pereira came to the U.S. from his native Brazil with his sister at the age of 8. By age 12, he found his way to a South Florida ice rink, where his skill, passion and personal drive landed him in the competitive world of international figure skating.

An injury took Luiz out of Olympic competition, but by that time, the FIU student had developed other passions. One was music—Luiz taught himself to play five instruments. The other was finance, which became his major. Singled out for his diligence and willingness to help others, he was named a fellow in the SunTrust FIU Financial Wellness Clinic, helping to build the curriculum and teach high school students.

Luiz paired his interest in machine learning with his background in finance and investing. A founding member of the College of Business Dean’s Student Advisory Board, Luiz also worked as a learning assistant in FIU’s mathematics and statistics department. He and a friend also founded Algo-nomics, a stock research platform that integrates an algorithmic style of stock research for retail traders who don’t know how to program.

After graduation, Luiz has a summer internship at Man Numeric, a quantitative hedge fund in Boston. Luiz will then return to FIU to finish his mathematics degree in the fall and hopes to someday use his skills and insights in machine learning in other fields, including alternative energy and real estate work with his parents.
