Christina Bazzaroni

Degree: Ph.D. in Global and Sociocultural Studies

College/School: Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs

When Christina Bazzaroni was 14 years old, she was diagnosed and treated for leukemia. Ten years later, she was declared cured. But this was not the end of her battle with cancer.

Christina would be diagnosed with cancer several more times over the course of her adult life, and she would undergo various treatments.

Throughout this time, Christina earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis and her master’s degree in African and African diaspora studies from FIU. She then pursued a Ph.D. in global and sociocultural studies, also at FIU. While undergoing multiple surgeries and treatments, she completed her doctoral program, which included field research, as well as writing and defending her dissertation.

Through it all, she says prayer, a daily spiritual practice, self-care and the love and support she received from family, friends and colleagues has kept her going. She is particularly grateful for the encouragement of her dissertation committee and chair, Jean Rahier, who is a professor of anthropology and African & African diaspora studies.

Creative outlets like dance have also been a source of joy and inspiration. Christina has performed several times as a member of the community ensemble of Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater in Portland, Oregon, a group creating contemporary works inspired by the folklore of the African diaspora, exploring themes of social change, adversity and hope.

After graduation, Christina plans to teach, travel and develop new research, writing and consulting aspects of her social science career.
